The World Food Programme (WFP) has embarked on the distribution of home take-away ratio for government aided and community primary school learners in the Karamoja Sub-region.
The distribution exercise launched on Tuesday, August 20, 2026, at Mary Mother of God Primary School in Kotido West Division targets to benefit 221,000 learners from 284 schools across the nine districts in the region.
Each beneficiary will receive 7.9kgs of rice, one kg of green grams, and 250Mls of vegetable cooking oil.
The head of Identity Management at World Food Programme in Karamoja, Samuel Bayo, said the take home- food ratio is aimed at ensuring that school-going children in the region have access to food while at home at a time when many households in the region are struggling to get meals because of acute food insecurity.
He added that the distribution is also intended to motivate learners to come back to school next term and teach parents in Karamoja that giving children access education is beneficial.
According him, only pupils and learners who attained 20 percent attendance before the closure of schools on Friday, August 21, 2026, will qualify for the take-home food package.
Bayo said World Food Program (WFP) has put in place all checks and balances to ensure that the food reaches the intended beneficiaries and there is no mismanagement or abuse of the intervention.
Samuel Longoli and Daniel Dengel Comboni a primary seven candidate applauded World Food Programme for them with take-home food ratio, which they will eat for some weeks during this period of food insecurity.
Meron Cynthia, P7 candidate and Clara Acau, urged the the school authorities to continue lobbying for more support, noting that many parents are struggling to feed their children due to the onging hunger crisis.
They are optimistic that with this, many will be persuaded to take their children to school when the government reopens educational institutions
