Kotido-The Food and Agriculture organization has cautioned livestock farmers in Kotido district to be alert following the outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Nakapiripirit district.
Last month, the national early warning bulletin for October confirmed the outbreak of the disease in Nakapiripirit.
Julius Masereka the Kotido district FAO early warning focal point person while speaking during the district disaster management committee meeting on Wednesday said there is need for the farmers and the district officials to put in place strategies to prevent the disease from spreading to north Karamoja.
He explains that the district and farmers need to be alert and ensure that all animals are vaccinated against FMD before they start migrating to other regions in search of water and pasture.

Fredrick Emmanuel Nyanga the assistant CAO asked the veterinary extension workers, and the sub county leaders to increase surveillance and report to the responsible officers in case of suspected cases.
In November 2019, the ministry of agriculture, animal industry and Fisheries-MAAIF imposed animal quarantine in the three districts of Kotido, Kaabong and Abim following an outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease that killed dozens of livestock. It was later lifted in September 2020.
