Police in Kotido district have commenced a four day’s training on the collection, preservation of forensic evidence, and management of cases of violence against women and children.

The training with support from UN Women targets police officers from sexual offenses desk, child and family protection office, records, scene of crime officers, community liaison officers and some officers from general duties.

It aims at building the capacity of the officers who deal with cases of violence against women and children to be able to effectively manage the victims without biases and retraumatisation as well as conduct proper investigation to effectively prosecute suspects.

Lamex Kigozi, the deputy RPC for Kidepo region in his opening remarks said that the training is timely because the police investigators have been having challenges unearthing facts surrounding the matters related to violence against women and girls.

ASP Lydia Nambuusi who is coordinating the training says it is on the background of officers providing insufficient evidence that the UN Women decided to partner with the Uganda police force to train the officers.

Senior commissioner of police Namutebi Adija the chief political commissar while opening the training asked the officers to effectively utilize the knowledge they get.

She emphasized that violence against women and children needs immediate response because such cases are volatile.
