A renowned piggery farmer from Nakoreto village, in Maaru Sub-County in Kotido District is counting losses after an unidentified group of thieves stole his three gilts (female pigs) valued at Shs3.5 million.

Emmanuel Kiyonga says that his three expectant gilts were stolen at around 1:00 am on Wednesday night, May 6, 2026, a few minutes after he locked his door to sleep.

He explains other breastfeeding gilts in the pig pen alerted him after they started squealing unceasingly, signaling danger.

Kiyonga observes that when he came out of the house to check on the pig pen, he found that the door was widely open and three gilts missing.

He says the incident is a major setback to his efforts to get out poverty.

Paul Adia the LCIII of Maaru sub county confirmed the incident, blaming it to idle youth, whom he says have shunned product work and instead resort to terrorizing the community stealing people’s property.

He states that this is the first time thieves have stolen pigs in his areas of jurisdiction as thieves always target cattle, goats, sheep, and chicken.

Adia warns criminals involved in theft and other criminal activities to eschew such acts and take advantage of the current rains to engage in agriculture if they are to leave longer.
