The mass exodus of Kotido residents in search of food in the Sub-regions of Teso, Acholi and Lango, has left elderly women struggling to fend for the children left under their care.
Since December, last year, hundreds of women and the youth from Kotido have been fleeing their homes to nearby districts of Abim, Amuria, Kapelebyong, Soroti, Serere, Katakwi and Ngora in Teso sub region in search of food as hunger persists.
Others are reportedly fleeing leaving behind young children with vulnerable elderly women, which adds a burden to them.
Lotyanga Adiit aged 100, a resident of Rengen Sub-County is one the elderly women, who are currently struggling to care for her grandchildren who have been abandoned under her care by their mothers.
She explains that her 7 daughters were driven to Teso by harsh living conditions at home many years ago to seek survival, but they have never returned or provided support for the children.
Lotyanga, at her advanced age, is currently struggling in the quarry site where she joined a community of quarrymen and women to provide for her grandchildren.
Lotyanga is not alone in this struggle; Nakwang Maria and Aleper Claudia are two other women who are also struggling to support their families through stone quarrying business.
They explained that through stone quarrying they are able to provide basic needs to their families and educate their children.
Additionally, they are able to save weekly in their Village Savings Loan Association (VSLA) called Lomuru, which has improved their socio-economic well-being.
