The Ministry of Education and Sports has given schools from the minority communities of IK in Kaabong, Tapeth (Moroto) and Pokot in Amudat district special tickets, allowing them to compete directly at the upcoming 2026 National Music, Dance, and Drama (MDD) Festival.
George Odongo, the Chairperson of Karamoja Music, Dance and Drama MDD Association, confirmed that Karamoja will send a total of eight schools to the national event.
While three slots are already secured through special tickets, five more will be earned through ongoing regional competitions at Arengesiepe Secondary School in Nabilatuk District.
Odongo highlighted the significant improvement in Karamoja’s regional schools, noting the rising number of primary schools excelling from zonal to regional levels.
He credited this success to continuous training provided by regional music trainers, which has greatly enhanced the children’s skills and knowledge.
Appealing to parents, Odongo encouraged them to support their children’s participation in sports and MDD activities, emphasizing how these experiences boost brain development and improve academic performance.
Twelve schools from across the region, including Moroto, Nabilatuk, Abim, Kaabong, Amudat, Napak, and Kotido districts, are competing in this vibrant two-day event, which concludes today with an award ceremony.
The national festival will take place in Iganga district from August 21 to 26, 2026, where Karamoja’s representatives will have the chance to showcase their talents on a larger stage.
