A Uganda People’s Defense Force (UPDF) soldier attached to Lobanya detachment in Kotido District has been shot dead, with another injured in a fierce fire exchange with an armed Karamojong cattle rustler.

The incident occurred on Monday at 6:00 AM in Kapeta Sub County, located in the western part of Kotido district during an operation carried out by UPDF forces to curb armed criminals operating in the area.

Lt. Col. Gustus Mugarura, the 405 Brigade Commander, stated that another soldier was injured but is in stable condition, without divulging any further details.

He added that the UPDF successfully neutralized the criminal and recovered his rifle.

The rustler was then identified as Lochoro Loojo Lokwalem, a resident of Lotanyat village in Kapeta Sub County, Kotido District.

In response to the incident, Lt. Col. Mugarura warned individuals still in possession of illegal guns to take advantage of the amnesty announced by President Yoweri Museveni in 2021 and surrender their weapons to the government.

He further cautioned those destabilizing communities with guns that they will eventually be apprehended and face the law.

Security circles have been urging the youth, known as Karachuna, to embrace peace and development.

However, some individuals have persisted in pursuing illegal means of survival through cattle thefts and raids.
