The Uganda national teacher’s union (UNATU) in Abim district is mourning the death of two of their teachers.

The two teachers attached to Abim district local government education department both died on Wednesday while still in active service after battling serious ailments.

Steve Biko Aupe the Abim district UNATU Chairperson while speaking to Etoil A Karamoja identified the deceased as Luke Omara a 56 year old teacher from Akwanagagwel parish, but attached to Gulonger primary school, and Bosco Awicho, a 53 year old teacher attached to Obolokome primary school, all in Abim district.

Aupe says much as a section of community members claim one of the teachers was poisoned, reports from medical doctors indicate that the two died of alcohol related complications. He says they are now organizing for their burials tentatively scheduled for Saturday

Aupe further observed that there is an increase in the number of teachers dying of such complications in Abim, attributing it to the poor welfare of teacher’s, something he says is forcing a number of them to resort to excessive alcohol consumption.

Magaret Auma the Abim district inspector of schools when contacted by our reporter, confirmed the development, but declined to divulge more details instead referring our reporter to the Abim district education officer.

Our efforts to get a comment from the Abim district education officer Charles Dicken Owiny were however, fruitless as our repeated phone calls on his known phone number went unanswered.
