In a continued effort to improve road safety and reduce road carnage, drivers and boda boda riders in Karamoja sub region have been urged to embrace road safety measures.
The Uganda Traffic Police report indicates that 4,806 Ugandans lost their lives in road crashes in 2023, marking a notable increase from the 4,534 deaths recorded in 2022.
Of the total fatalities, pedestrians accounted for 1,675 deaths, motorcyclists 1,520, motorcycle passengers 614, vehicle passengers 324, and drivers 23.
SSP Godfrey Achiria the RPC Kidepo while addressing Christians at the Good Shepard cathedral during a mass animated by police officers on Sunday said there is need for riders to embrace the use of reflector jackets and helmets.
He however, noted that wearing helmets and reflector jackets is very crucial but above all, being vigilant and observing road signage is the most important.
Achiria further tasked local government leaders in the region to reign over their drivers saying a number of accidents could be avoided by simply following road signage interpretations and traffic rules and regulations.
