The minister for Karamoja affairs Peter Lokeris has suffered a major setback in his quest to represent the people of Chekwii East County, Nakapiripirit district in Parliament on National Resistance Movement (NRM) party ticket.
Lokeri’s 29-year reign came to an end on Thursday, July 17, 2025, after he suffered a momentous defeat in the concluded NRM party primaries for parliamentary flag bearers.
Lokeris, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Chekwii East County lost the party’s flag to Stephenson Lokoru, a clinical officer and former civil society activist who garnered 2,930 votes in the hotly contested three horse race.
He came third with position with 2,360 votes, losing with a margin of 270 votes.
Chekwii East County was curved out of Chekwii Constituency in 2021 and Lokeri was elected as the first Member of Parliament.
Lokeri, who has been in parliament since 1996, joins a long list of long serving members of President Museveni’s cabinet who suffered shocking defeat in the just concluded National Resistance Movement (NRM) party primaries.
However, Esther Anyanukun, the state Minister of State for Gender, Labour and Social Development in charge of Labour, Employment and Industrial Relations retained the NRM flag for Nakapiripirit Woman Member of Parliament.
