The National Resistance Movement (NRM) party supporters in several parts of Kotido district and Municipality, did not show the same level of enthusiasm in the Mayor, LCV chairperson, and LCV councilor primaries as they did in the recent election for party parliamentary flag bearers.

Despite recent guidelines issued by the NRM party’s Election Commission Dr. Tanga Odoi, stating the elections would start at 9:00 AM, in Karamoja sub-region, many polling stations reported had few voters and election officials present at the scheduled time.

Polling stations such as Langaro, Karumba Lodinoyi Logoman, Lomaja, and Napong in Kotiang parish in north division had no voters or election officials by 9:00 AM.

At Kamurumor polling station only 30 voters out of 172 registered voters by 9:30 AM, while Kanamwar polling station had no voters, leaving village registrars idle.

In Kotido town, business was as usual as people were busy attending to their businesses.

Our reporter, Stanley Ebele, caught up with some vendors at Kotido Main Market, most of whom indicated that they were waiting for the voting process to begin so they could shut their stalls and go to vote.

Emmanuel Lochoto, the Kotido District NRM Assistant Registrar, said that the voting materials include registers, declaration forms, pens, and aprons for village registers were dispatched to the polling stations at 9:00 AM.

“We first sent the materials to far sub-counties and others that experienced a delay in the recent parliamentary primaries. Right now, I can authoritatively state all polling stations have the materials to conduct the polls,” Lochoto said.

He warned the village registrars against acts of altering results as this attracts disciplinary action.

In Kotido Municipality the fight is between the incumbent Peter Abrahams Irar and the LCIII Chairman central division, Alex Paulsen Locham.

The security preparations continued as police, UPDF and ASTU personnel were seen conducting patrols around Kotido town and other polling stations.

Kotido District Police Commander, Hassan Hussein Ssekalema, said that the deployment is intended to guarantee a peaceful, free, and fair election.

Ssekalema urged voters not to feel intimidated, assuring them that the security presence is purely to maintain order.
