The Kotido Resident District Commissioner, Charles Ichogor, has raised concern over the growing number of children who were rescued from the streets and given a chance to attend school, are dropping out and returning to the streets.
In January, this year, the District Security Committee conducted an operation and rounded up 37 children who were living in the streets of Kotido town.
These children were subsequently enrolled in boarding section at Kotido Army Primary School to prevent them from returning to the streets.
However, reports have emerged that 12 out of 37 street children have dropped out of school and returned to the streets.
Ichogor, said that when schools broke for first term holidays, he received report cards for only 25 children.
According to him, he was informed by the school authorities that 12 children had escaped before taking end of term exams.
Despite this setback, Ichogor revealed that the remaining 25 children performed exceptionally well in their first-term exams.
“We rounded up 37 children and the security committee decided to taken to Kotido Army primary school but unfortunately, 12 of them managed to escape from school and returned to the streets”, said Ichogor.
The RDC explained that this demonstrates their academic potential, which could be further realized with proper support from their parents.
