On Monday,27th, May 2024, schools across the country opened for the second academic term, in line with the education calendar. However, days in to the term, a number of parents say they are still struggling to pay their children’s school fees and meet the requirements obligation.

Our spot check on a number of schools in North Karamoja on Monday showed that many schools recorded fewer learners than enrolled while others did not have a single learner reporting.

Francesca Abonyo a mother of seven children and a resident of Acholi Inn cell in Kotido municipality says she is not in position to send her children to school due to lack of school fees.

Abonyo explains that even the little money she gets from the local brew commonly known as (Ebutiya) isn’t enough for her to send all her seven children to school.

Simon Lometo another parent from Kalolet village in Kotido North division says most school going children in his village have resorted to casual labour to find money for school requirements as parents struggle to find school fees.
