Over 2,000 residents in South Division, Kotido Municipality, are facing a severe water crisis after unknown individuals vandalised three boreholes on Sunday night.

Two boreholes in Nakaal parish and one in Kapadakook were targeted, with vital spare parts stolen and the structures damaged.

The incident has cut off access to clean water for an estimated 2,000 people across eight villages.

In Nakaal village, residents who rely on a borehole that serves five villages are now resorting to fetching water from ponds, raising concerns about potential waterborne disease outbreaks.

This particular borehole had only been functional for three days following recent repairs.

Local authorities and residents expressed dismay at the brazen acts of vandalism.

Investigations suggest that the incidents are linked to a single group of individuals who employed similar methods to dismantle the boreholes, likely using spanners and heavy-duty hammers.

John Paul Achila, the village LC 1 Chairperson wants special attention to address the increasing cases of vandalism of water sources.

This latest vandalism underscores the ongoing challenge of water scarcity in the Kotido district, where previous incidents have already hampered efforts to provide clean water access- a fundamental human right and a key Sustainable Development Goal.

The repeated targeting of water sources is exacerbating the already dire situation, leaving communities vulnerable and hindering development efforts.
