Abim residents have expressed bitterness over the reported deplorable state of the only hospital available in the district
The facility that receives over 300 patients a day has for months come under the spotlight for its poor state and services delivered to the populace.
In the latest development, a number of concerned residents claim that the hospital that was initially manned by six doctors has lately been operating without a single doctor for close to two months, forcing patients especially mothers who seek special medical attention in the neighboring hospitals for further attention.
Godfrey Omara, a resident of Abim town claims that in the last two months, they have hardly seen any doctor at the hospital, noting that mothers who need emergency procedures like C-section have to contribute money to have them referred, while others who cannot afford are sometimes left stranded.
Omara is now calling upon the district health department to look into the matter, as the issue is getting out of hand.
Earnest Ayen, the Abim district youth chairperson says initially, the hospital was supported by volunteer doctors who later left, noting that the issue, has been made worse by the deployed absentee doctors who are believed to be having other private work stations in other districts
Godfrey Okello, the district secretary for health, acknowledges the challenges affecting the hospital, noting that they are currently doing what it takes to have the facility run effectively.
Johny Dewest Ariko the Abim district chairperson, while responding to social media concerns on the same issue said out of the six doctors attached to the hospital, only two have been active on ground, two others are currently on study leave, one was interdicted while one has absconded duty.
