“As joint security forces (army and police) we will continue encourage armed individuals still in the wilderness to take the advantage of amnesty window to surrender guns and join reformed cattle rustlers and development from government programmes such as the Parish Development Model (PDM)”, said Mt. Moroto Regional Police Spokesperson, Mike Longole.

Two suspected armed cattle rustlers in Nakapiripirit District have been granted amnesty after voluntarily surrendering an SMG rifle, with live ammunition to joint security forces following an intelligence led operation.
The pardoned cattle rustlers have been identified as Michael Loke and Luke Lokol, both residents of Nakuyon Village, Lokitapan Parish in Namalu Sub-County.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, Mike Longole, the Mt. Moroto Regional Police Spokesperson said the duo surrendered the guns on Monday, May 4, 2026, and were set free in accordance with the amnesty window.
The illegal gun was then taken to the government stores for further management, according to Longole.
He explained that under the current security Standards Operating Procedures (SOPs), the duo adhered to the existing amnesty window.
Longole said that under this arrangement, individuals who voluntarily surrender illegal guns are documented by the security teams in collaboration with the local leaders.
He lauded the local leaders across the Karamoja Sub-region for their continued cooperation and coordination in a multi-sectoral approach to pacify the restive region.
The joint security of police and army will continue to encourage individuals still in possession of illegal firearms and living in wilderness to embrace the existing amnesty period to surrender the guns, according to Longole.
