While thousands of pilgrims flocked to Namugongo Shrine for vibrant Uganda Martyrs’ Day celebrations, a starkly different scene unfolded at Christ Church Cathedral in North Karamoja Diocese.
The cathedral, usually a hub of spiritual activity, remained locked and deserted, with no prayers or services held to mark the significant occasion.
Etoil A Karamoja reporter’s visit to the cathedral, anticipating communal prayers, met with quiet cathedral with all the doors and windows shut.

Rev. Deacon Emmanuel Abura, found digging in a nearby garden, confirmed the absence of a Martyrs’ Day mass, citing a lack of planning.
He explained that key diocesan leaders, including Bishop Rt. Rev. Simon Aisu Akol, Rev. Alfred Okong (Chaplain to the Bishop), and Diocesan Secretary Rev. Canon Alfred Okello, were away on official duties, preventing them from leading the service.
This silence at Christ Church Cathedral contrasts sharply with the earlier announcement by the Diocesan Secretary on May 19th, stating that 30 pilgrims from the diocese would be sent to Namugongo.
However, investigations revealed that no pilgrims from North Karamoja Diocese traveled to Namugongo this year, further highlighting the quiet commemoration within the diocese.
Despite the lack of formal celebrations, Christians like Emmanuel Akilenga and Simon Lobwok still underscored the importance of Martyrs’ Day for promoting faith, hope, and reflection.
