President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is expected to grace the upcoming 9th edition of the Karamoja Cultural Festival, which will be held in Nakapiripirit District, a major highlight that underscores the festival’s importance to the Karamojong community and the broader cultural landscape of Uganda.

The annual festival held on rotational basis take shape at Old Primary School in Nakapiripirit Town Council, from September 8th -13th, 2025, under the theme “Strengthening Cultural Cohesion in Diversity for Socio Economic Transformation”.

Lawrence Wadada, the Nakapiripirit district Chief Administrative Officer and the chairperson of the organizing committee, said that they sent the letter to the office of the president earlier this week inviting him to come and grace the event but they are yet to receive feedback.

He said that the five-day event estimated to cost Shs618.2 million is expected to bring together over one million Ateker Speakers from across Uganda, Kenya, South Sudan and Ethiopia.

“This festival is not just about celebration; it is a powerful reminder of our shared heritage and the need to preserve and promote our cultural practices,” Wadada said.

Lined up for the festival are performances of popular Karamoja traditional dance known as “Edongonga”, cultural match and exhibition, election of Karamoja ambassador, and competitions in talent.

Local artisans will showcase their talent through a variety of cultural exhibitions, featuring everything from traditional beadwork to contemporary Karamoja art.

The festival will also highlight fashion, with traditional and modern clothing collections that pay homage to the colourful and unique style of the Karamojong community.

Additionally, the festival will offer a platform for storytelling, where elders and cultural ambassadors will recount ancient Karamojong tales, sharing wisdom and history that have shaped the community’s values.

John Nangiro, the LCV Chairperson of Nakapiripirit district said” beyond the celebrations, the Karamoja Cultural Festival is an important platform for regional unity and collaboration.”

He explained that with the presence of political leaders and dignitaries from various sectors, the event will provide an opportunity to discuss the future of the Karamojong community, cultural preservation and regional development.

“We are bringing together the best of our traditions. This festival will not only showcase the Karamojong culture but also create lasting connections that will contribute to the growth of our region,” Nangiro added.
