Nakapiripirit District has been disqualified from hosting the International Labour Day celebrations, with Napak District taking over as the new host.
The communication was made by the Minister of Gender, Labour, and Social Development, Beti Amongi Ongom, on grounds that Nakaale, the proposed grounds to host the activity in Nakapiripirit district was waterlogged and unsuitable, posing security concerns.
In a written response seen by Etoil A Karamoja, Amongi said that it would require the organizing committee 50 million shillings to work on the venue and make it suitable to host the national function.
The minister also cited concerns of political disharmony that she said could turn the event into addressing political discontents.
Minister Amongi said that the decision to shift the event to Napak district was made due to time constraints and the need for a venue that meets security parameters.
George Owanyi, the Resident District Commissioner of Nakapiripirit, confirms that he has been notified of the changes through an email. He said the decision has a high implication on the business communities who were already gearing up for event.
Milton Odongo, the Napak Resident District Commissioner when contacted on the progress of the ongoing preparation, declined to comment saying he had heard of it but was awaiting the final communication since the matter is still being discussed in parliament.
