Rt. Rev. Dominic Eibu Lokutu, the Bishop of Kotido Catholic Diocese has urged Christians to listen more closely to God and others and to shun hate speech during the Lenten season.

The Lenten season, which lasts for at least a period of 40 days, started today with the marking of Ash Wednesday, where devotees receive ash on their foreheads in the shape of a cross as a sign of repentance and human mortality.

Believers are expected to observe Lenten season with self-sacrifice, prayer, and other religious activities leading to Easter, the day believed to be when Jesus Christ arose from the dead.

In the message, themed “Lenten Season, A time for Growth”, issued on the eve of Ash Wednesday, bishop Eibu urged the faithful to use Lenten season as a chance to reorient their hearts toward God’s voice.

The prelate explained that every path towards conversion begins by allowing the word of God to touch our hearts and welcoming it with a docile spirit.

According to Bishop Eibu, a relationship between hearing the word, accepting it, and allowing it to bring about a transformation.

He encouraged Catholics to allow the word of God to touch their hearts with docility so that Lent may become a welcome opportunity to heed the voice of the Lord and renew their commitment to following Christ.

Once again this year, the time has come to welcome this beautiful season in the cycle of our faith. Each year, the church organizes a 40-day journey of conversion for her children. It is urgent because each one of us, has fallen and in need of a conversion of heart and mind,” said Bishop Eibu.

Referring to the book of Prophet Joel, Verse 12-13, he emphasized the need for Christians to return to the Lord with all their hearts through fasting, weeping, and mourning for he is gracious, merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in mercy.
