Several vendors at Kotido main market were on Thursday May 29, 2025 left stranded as central division authorities sealed off gates leading in and out of the market in an operation to crack down on tax defaulters.

The operation conducted by members of the revenue enhancement committee saw vendors subjected to screening and only those who had fulfilled their tax obligation were allowed into the market.

Jane Logel the assistant town clerk, Kotido central dvision said the authorities took action due to non- compliance by the market vendors to pay the Shs20,000 monthly dues to Kotido Municipal Council.

She noted that some of the vendors have not paid the market dues since July 2024.

However, Ronal Wozisi, the chairperson Bantu venders community blamed municipal authorities for locking their shops without prior notification.

He claimed that the municipal authorities didnt inform them about the ongoing operation which infriges on their rights, a claim which the assistant town clerk Logel refutes.

Emmanuel Okaja, the Kotido Municipal Town Clerk said they are losing millions of shillings as a result of noncompliance among the vendors and other businesses that evade paying taxes, leading to enforcement action.

He points out that poor revenue mobilization has affected garbage management among other key planned services for the community.

Okaje reminded all taxpayers to clear any outstanding taxes immediately to avoid inconviniences.
