A gate Way bus destined for Kotido town from Kampala was this morning involved in a road accident in Amuria Town.

According to witness and police accounts, the bus registration number UAJ 250M, veered off the road just after Pelican Secondary School signpost at 6:00 AM.
Paul Eotu, a resident of Amuria town council, who witnessed the accident told Etoil A Karamoja radio on the phone that only one passenger about the bus sustained an injury in the arm and was rushed to Amuria General Hospital for proper management.
SP Benedict Igama, the Amuria District Police Commander, confirmed the incident saying their preliminary investigations indicate that the driver, who left Kampala by 10:30 pm the previous day, had fatigue and slept off the steering, according to witness accounts.
He said another bus was called to evacuate the passengers to Kotido while the ill-fated bus was to be towed back to Soroti City Garage for maintenance.
He advised bus companies plying long routes, especially in the night to ensure there are arrangements to change the drivers at certain points to ensure that their drivers do not suffer fatigue while on the route. He also called on all the road users to observe the traffic regulations as the festive season approaches.
This is the second incident involving the company buses in Amuria town this year. In March, several passengers survived after a gateway bus lost control and tipped over along the same route in Amuria district.
In august this year, Government temporarily suspended the operations of all gate way buses across the country following a grisly road crash that killed seven people and injured over 30 others after a Kampala bound gate way bus collided with a truck in Lwengo District on Masaka –Mbarara highway.
The bus operators in Karamoja have always attributed the accidents to the bad roads in the Karamoja region.
