The dilemma of referring expectant mothers and other critically sick patients for further medical attention in Kotido district due to lack of ambulance could now be history.

This follows the arrival of a state-of the-art Toyota Land Cruiser Ambulance equipped with oxygen, a first aid kit, and a larger bed for patients, a donation from the ministry of health to Jie County.

Daniel Lochoro, the Kotido Deputy Chief Administrative Officer said, the ambulance with registration number UG 3100162, was delivered to the district on Friday July 5, 2025 and is currently parked at Kotido General Hospital waiting official commissioning.

Lochoro explained, “the ambulance is part of the modern ambulances that the Ministry of Health is providing to constituencies across the country in an effort to improve maternal healthcare.”

He noted that the arrival of the long-awaited ambulance is a big milestone not only for Jie County but the entire district, as it will help ease the transportation of expectant mothers from remote areas to health centers.

Dr. Cerino Acar, the Kotido District Health Officer, stated that the new ambulance is a breath of fresh air for both patients and health workers.

He noted that the new ambulance comes at a time when Kotido district has been facing challenges in emergency responses due to the lack of an ambulance.

“Kotido district has been facing a significant challenge in handling health emergencies after both ambulances attached to Kacheri Health Centre III and the General Hospital were involved in separate road crashes that caused them to go off-road due to the damages,” Dr. Acar explained.

On November 14, 2024, an ambulance attached to Kacheri Health Centre III crashed in Pader District at Lacek-Ocot along the Gulu-Kitgum highway.

The Kotido General Hospital ambulance, with registration number UAY 273Y, was involved in an accident in Lopeei sub-county, Napak district on Sunday, May 11th, 2025.

The ambulance was transporting a mother who had developed health complications after delivery to Matany Hospital in Moroto District.

According to Dr. Acar, the district is currently looking for funding to repair the two ambulances that are parked in the garage.
