At least four mothers have reportedly died within a month as St. Pius HCIII in Lotisan Sub- County, Moroto District, faces a critical challenge in transportation of patients to the Moroto Regional Referral Hospital following a broken-down of the ambulance system.

The victims are mothers who get complications during childbirth at the facility. Virgo Virginia Nnamazzi, the facility in charge says they had an ambulance that broke down following the poor state of roads connecting to the facility.

St. Pius HCIII is a facility manned by Moroto Catholic Diocese and it is also associated with the Costa Family Foundation’s “Health and Hygiene in Kidepo-Rupa” project, which aims to improve health and hygiene conditions in the area, according to the Costa Family Foundation.

Nnamazzi explained that they had previously repaired the ambulance, but it broke down again, making it difficult for the facility to transfer patients to other health centers.

John Robert Adupa, the LC3 chairperson of Lotisan Sub- County, has implored the district leadership to provide an ambulance to the facility as the management looks for resources to repair their own.

Adupa says that St. Pius is the only facility providing health services in Lotisan sub- county.

In response, Dr. James Lemukol, the District Health Officer for Moroto District, said that the situation can only be handled by the district if formal communication is given by the health facility management.
