A number of schools in Kotido district have closed or are considering closing earlier than the official date due to shortage of food to feed the learners.
According to the school calendar released by the ministry of education and sports, the first term is slated to end on 5th May 2023. However, some schools within Kotido have already sent learners home while others say they will break off this week.

Juventine Okori, the head teacher Kacheri SS told our reporter that they will close on Thursday because they don’t have enough food to push them till the end of the term.
He explained that the crisis was worsened when World Food Program halved the food supply to schools and the government also reduced the capitation grant to a half.
Amos Nkule, the director of studies Nakapelimoru army SS that closed last Friday said they used to get 17m as capitation but that was reduced to a half prompting the school administration and PTA to ask students to start contributing food starting next term.
Panyangara SS according to inside sources may also close by Friday this week due to the same challenge.
Jimmy Owilli, the deputy head teacher Kotido SS however told our reporter that they will follow the school calendar since they have just received food from their suppliers.
Our attempts to get a comment from education offices were futile by the time of filing this story.
