Police in Soroti have arrested and detained a man suspected of illegally selling immigration documents following an intelligence-led operation carried out on Sunday, February 22, 2026.
According to law enforcement officials, the suspect was apprehended after weeks of surveillance and tip-offs from concerned residents.
The operation, conducted by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in collaboration with intelligence officers, targeted individuals believed to be running a clandestine network that forged and sold immigration papers to unsuspecting clients.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Haji Ibrahim Saiga, the Regional Police Commander (RPC) for East Kyoga, said the suspect was arrested in Orwadai Cell, Soroti City East Division.
He revealed that during the operation, police recovered 261 passports, several certificates of good conduct, and yellow-fever vaccination cards, all suspected to be forged or unlawfully obtained.
Investigators believe these were being sold to desperate individuals seeking employment opportunities abroad or attempting to bypass legal immigration procedures.
ACP Saiga said that police in collaboration with sister security agencies and leaders, have launched a comprehensive inquiry to trace the origin of the recovered documents and to identify any accomplices connected to the illegal trade.
He observed that more arrests could follow as they pursue leads on other individuals connected to the racket.
“We are committed to dismantling these illegal networks. Forged immigration documents not only put individuals at risk but also compromise the integrity of our country’s immigration system,” ACP Saiga stated.
He warned that the illegal trade in immigration documents has become a growing concern in Uganda, with criminal groups exploiting vulnerable citizens eager to travel for work or study.
“Such activities often expose victims to exploitation, trafficking, and financial loss”, Saiga explained.
The police have urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, stressing that genuine immigration services can only be accessed through official government channels.
