Mt. Moroto territorial police have confirmed that at least five traders on Saturday, August 29, 2026, died on the spot and several others critically injured following a road crash along Moroto-Soroti Highway.
The crash occurred at around 5:30 p.m, when a vehicle Reg No. UBH 543U overturned at Lodoon Village in Lorengechora Sub County, Napak district after the driver lost control of the truck due to a tyre burst.
Mike Longole, the Mt. Moroto Regional Police/ASTU Spokesperson confirmed the fatal crash, saying the truck loaded with an unspecified number of cattle and traders was enroute to Soroti from Moroto district.
He said that the police from Iriri police station led by the OC ASP Chekulanga visited and documented the scene.
According to Longole, the casualties and the deceased bodies were taken to Katakwi General Hospital.
He stated that the identities of both the deceased and the injured had not been established by police who visited the scene.
Longole, said the wreckage of the truck remains at the scene pending towing to the police station as investigations to ascertain the cause of the crash are underway.
The preliminary investigations, according to Longole, reveal that the truck was overloaded, which could have caused a tyre burst.
Police conveys profound condolences to the bereaved families and cautions drivers against overloading, and ensure that the vehicles are in proper mechanical condition before setting off.
