The 405 Brigade Commander Lt. Col. Gaston Mugarura has warned the incumbent Members of Parliament in Kotido District against involving their security escorts in political activities, as this could result in their guards being withdrawn.

His warning comes amid allegations made by some NRM party candidates that the incumbent legislators are using security escorts assigned to them to intimate their opponents ahead of the party primaries.

Peter Abrahams Lokii, the Member of Parliament for Jie County who is seeking re-election alleged that the soldiers have been spying his residence and CAVES bar where he casually sits to pass time and strategize for his campaigns.

We have had incidents where escorts of certain members of parliament have been seen wearing “Nakatukok,” the Karomojong traditional attire. We have evidence of this, but we are hesitant to publicize it too widely,” Lokii claimed.

Nuria Ashraf Teko who is vying for the Kotido District Woman Member of Parliament also claims that soldiers always spy her area of residence during daytime and late in the night.

According to her, the continued presence of armed personnel around her residence has caused panic among her tenants, with some threatening to move out of fear of being abducted or attacked by the soldiers.

It’s for this reason that Lt. Col. Gaston Mugarura, has warned political contenders against involving army or police escorts in political activities since their sole assignment is purely to provide personal security.

“We have provided these soldiers for your personal protection. Please do not involve them in political activities or misconduct,” Lt. Col. Mugarura explained.

Lt. Col. Mugarura stated that he will not hesitate to withdraw escorts that are being misused by their principals to engage in political activities such as campaigns and intimidating their rivals.
