Crime scene detectives on Monday morning picked up the body of an elderly woman who died under mysterious circumstances at Owino Market in Soroti City.
Agnes Sagal, a Karimojong woman who has been operating a restaurant within the market, was found dead in a lockup where she and a teenage girl had been sleeping.
Evelyn Amucu, a teenager who had been sleeping alongside Sagal in the lockup, said she was shocked to discover her friend’s lifeless body in the morning.
Simon Peter Alongu, the LC1 Chairperson of Adurukoi Cell in Southern Ward, Usuk Town Council in Katakwi District, confirmed the identity of the deceased, adding that her parents had been informed about the incident.
According to Alongu, Sagal is a daughter of Maria Moru and Lomuge Nangiro from Lokopo in Matany, Napak District.
Musa Oroma, the Assistant Resident City Commissioner of Soroti City (ARCC) and chairperson of the Owino Market vendors, said he received a call from vendors reporting that a person had been found dead in one of the market lockups.
Oroma expressed concern that some individuals continue to sleep in market lockups despite repeated warnings from management about the risks involved.
Police in Soroti have launched investigations to establish the cause of Sagal’s death and her body has been taken to Soroti City Mortuary, where it awaits a postmortem examination.
