The just concluded National Resistance Movement (NRM) party primaries for parliamentary flag bearers have unleashed a mixture of upsets, and jubilations in Kotido as some incumbents sailed through while others fell to newcomers.

On Thursday July 17, 2025, the voters from over 32 polling stations in Kotido north division were left disgruntled, after voting was suspended in their areas over lack of voting materials and alleged irregularities.

Due to mounting pressure from the voters and the impact of suspended elections on Kotido Woman Member of Parliament and Kotido Municipality Member of Parliament election outcome, the party’s electoral commission on Friday July 18, 2025, worked tooth and nails to conducted elections in affected polling stations under heavy security presence.

John Paul Namuya, the Kotido district NRM returning officer, declared Margaret Aleper Achilla, the Kotido district incumbent Woman Member of Parliament, a winner in a race marred with tension and irregularities.

She polled 35,656 votes defeating Nuria Teko Ashraf, who garnered 23098 votes, fortifying her grip on the district’s political landscape.

In Kotido Municipality, the incumbent Member of Parliament Ismail Muhammad Lomwar popularly known as Didi, defeated his long time tormentor Moses Adome Bildad, with a margin of 2,579 votes.

Lomwar polled 8,518 votes against Adome’s 5,939 votes, reaffirming his influence within the district and party structures.

Gabriel Achia Apabeeye, pulled a masterstroke victory against the incumbent Member of Parliament for Jie County, Peter Abrahams Lokii, in a three horse race.

Achia, who was considered by many including political pundits, as the underdog in the race garnered 22,093 votes, against Lokii’s 12,440 votes, while Dr. Paul Lochap, the Kotido district NRM party chairman trailed with 10,847 votes.
