Sheikh Pendo, expressed hope for a smooth electoral process, reminding politicians that ultimate power lies with the people and that unity and peace should prevail during and after the elections.
According to him, it is essential for everyone to line up behind the candidate of their choice calmly to exercise their voting rights on Election Day.
“It is important for everyone to line up calmly to exercise their voting rights on Election Day. Electoral violence is unacceptable, and I hope for a peaceful election process,” Sheikh Pendo explained
“We must acknowledge that genuine power resides with the populace, and it is crucial to accept the results, regardless of personal preferences. I urge all candidates and voters alike to prioritize peace during this election,” he added.
Sheikh Pendo warned that the one day’s elections event should not cause animosity and hatred among candidates and voters.
He observed that political tolerance is crucial for suitability of the country and peaceful coexistence of citizenry beyond the polls.
“Uganda will still exist even after the elections, and the residents and candidates who have lived harmoniously as neighbours will still need each other in their day-to-day activities, hence the need to remain peaceful,” Sheikh stated.
In a related development, Stephen Ekoom, the Abim Resident District Commissioner warns candidates against conducting night meetings and campaigns.
According to Ekoom, his office has received intelligence reports that some candidates are reportedly holding night meetings and campaigns contrary to the guidelines issued by the NRM party’s Electoral Commission Chairman Dr. Tanga Odoi.
He warned that any person found conducting political campaign meetings past 5:00 PM will face the full arm of the law.
Ekoom explained that any candidate who wishes to conduct political campaigns meetings, must write to the security office three days before the meeting; so that he or she could be provided with adequate security officers who would provide security during the meeting.
According to him, the security agencies in the district have set strategies to ensure that there is peace during the forthcoming NRM party primary elections.
Ekoom further urged politicians to refrain from using divisive language or engaging in activities that could incite violence.
“As security we are committed to promoting peace and stability in our communities and we will work tirelessly to ensure that our elections are conducted in a peaceful and orderly manner,” said Ekoom.
