In an attempt to tackling water crisis, North Karamoja Diocese has partnered with the American Friend, Brother Sam Ferryman to drill three boreholes in the districts of Kotido and Abim under African Legacy Project.
The beneficiary areas are Nasapir village in Nakwakwa Parish, Maaru Sub County, Kotido district, Lokapedi Ward, Pupukamuya Parish in Nyakwai Sub County, and Adea village all in Abim district.
The Vicar North Karamoja Diocese, Rev. Can. Calvin Eretu, said the beneficiary areas were selected based on low safe and clean water coverage.
He explained that the drilling of a borehole at Nasapir cell in Maaru Sub County, Kotido district is underway.
The borehole once completed will serve more than 2, 000 residents currently trekking 7km in search for clean water.
Rev. Can. Eretu, pointed out that the initiative represents a significant step in addressing this challenge and providing clean water to thousands of residents.
“We are grateful for this partnership, which will greatly help in addressing the water challenges faced by our communities,” he added.
He explained that they are committed to support communities in need of safe and water, describing access to clean water as a fundamental human right.
The borehole initiative has brought new hope to the beneficiaries, many of whom have long struggled to access clean water.
Veronica Adon, a resident Nasapir cell in Maaru Sub County, Kotido district said that borehole support has been long overdue.
She noted her and other women have been trekking long distance in searching for safe and clean water but the borehole being drilled in the area comes as a relief.
“As a housewife, I will be relieved because every morning I trek nearly three kilometers for water,” she said.
Yonah Locheng, the LC 1 Chairperson Nasapir cell, told Etoil A Karamoja on phone that residents in his area have been sharing water with animals from the open wells for a long time, a situation which exposes them to a possible outbreak of waterborne diseases.
