Police in Mt Moroto region has started a crackdown on commercial charcoal burners operating in the region, days after president Yoweri Museveni issued an executive order against charcoal trade.

Recently, the head of state issued an executive order number 3 that covered Anti-Cattle rustling efforts in North and north eastern Uganda as well as the damage to the environment caused by charcoal business.
Michaela Longole the Mt. Moroto regional police spokesperson told journalists on Monday that the affected Region and within the prohibited zone of commercial charcoal burning have since taken the directive and put it into force, .
He says commercial charcoal burning points are sighted along Lokapel-Nabilatuk road at Lotede village and Moroto- Nakapiripirit road at Kamusalaba, Moroto-Soroti road at Kautakou, Morulinga, Corner kapel, Nakichumet, Lomuria Angalepan, and Alekilek.
Other spots are Nakapiripirit- Mbale road, along Nakapiripirit- Amudat road at Moruita and Moroto-Lodwar road among others
Longole says police in conjunction with the District forest officials will now embark on Community sensitization in the affected areas to popularize the presidential order to avoid taking them by surprise.
Francis Chemusto the Mt Moroto Regional Police commander has since directed the District Police Commanders to team up with District officials to have the directive implemented alongside other major operations in their areas of responsibility.
Chemusto says so far three trucks loaded with over 200 bags of charcoal have already been impounded and parked at Moroto and Nakapiripirit Police yards.
