Moroto Catholic Diocese is in the final stages of preparations for the consecration of its magnificent new cathedral, Divine Mercy of Jesus on Saturday, May 24, 2025.
This momentous occasion will also mark the diocese’s 61st anniversary.
Fr. Paul Ngole, the Vicar General of Moroto Catholic Diocese who doubles as the chairperson of the central organizing committee, says that the construction of the new cathedral began in 2015, a year designated by the late Pope Francis as the “Year of God the Merciful Father.”
Fr. Ngole notes that the vision for the larger cathedral originated from the late Bishop Henry Ssentongo, as the old Regina Mundi Cathedral became smaller to accommodate the growing congregation.
The ambitious project spanned ten years, with Bishop Damiano Guzzetti inheriting the mantle of its completion upon his appointment.
He says that the new cathedral with capacity to host 5,000 Christians has a unique design that symbolizes forgiveness and reconciliation within the Karamoja region.
The consecration ceremony is anticipated to draw a large crowd, with an estimated 7,000 people expected to attend this historic event for the Moroto Catholic Diocese.
