The National Identification Registration Authority (NIRA) office in Kotido district today launched its mass ID renewal and enrollment exercise, aligning with the nationwide initiative.
The launch, overseen by the Assistant Resident District Commissioner (RDC), saw prominent government officials, healthcare workers, police, and media representatives registered.
This countrywide program, slated to last six to ten months, aims to renew 15.8 million expiring or expired IDs from 2024 to 2026.
It also targets new enrollments for citizens aged 18, particularly students, and those needing document corrections.
Hassan Bakaywike, Kotido’s NIRA Registration/IT Officer, stated that 52 Registration Assistants would conduct the exercise across all parishes.
He highlighted that new IDs will feature enhanced security, including biometric iris scanning, to prevent fraud.
Kotido Deputy District Internal Security Officer (DISO), Mado Muhamed Kujo, sternly warned registration staff against bribery and registering non-citizens.
He stressed that the registration is strictly for Ugandan citizens and that any attempt to register foreigners would be treated as a criminal act.
Meanwhile assistant RDC Peter Lokii urged public participation, underscoring that the ID is a fundamental right and crucial for accessing opportunities in Uganda.
