A section of residents in Kotido Municipality have expressed frustration over police slow response to crime, calling for a paradigm shift following a rise in case of night attacks in the area.
The residents claim that the police always take long to arrive at the crime scene when they are called, and in most cases, they don’t even intervene especially during night hours.
Their sentiments stem from an incident in which Hallelujah Adei, was beaten to coma by an unidentified group of criminals near NIRA offices on Wednesday night.
It’s reported that Adei made several alarms calling the security personnel guarding NIRA, Electoral Commission, and Andre Foods International (AFI) offices to come to his rescue, however his pleas for help fell on deaf ears.
The incident sparked anger among locals over a perceived failure of the police to protect residents.
Stella Akurut, the LC 1 Chairperson of Police Cell in Narikapet Parish, expressed her disappointment with the security personnel for failing to intervene despite being close to the crime scene.
She is now calling on the police to intensify both foot and motorized night patrols around town due to the growing insecurity caused by a group of criminals who are waylaying people on the streets.

This comes just days after the Kotido district Police Commander SP Hassan Hussein Ssekalema assured the public of their commitment to maintain law and order.
Speaking to this reporter earlier this week about the arrests of suspects linked to the killing of Kalips Ogong, also known as Okolej, SP Ssekalema, said they have intensified both foot and motorized patrols in the area.
“I want to assure the public that our security is very present both in Uniform and non-uniform, so stay calm we are on top of the game,” Ssekalema assured.
He also issued an appeal to the public to remain vigilant, security-conscious and observer neighbourhood watch at all times.
SP Ssekalema underscored the importance of community-based initiatives, such as neighborhood watch, enhanced security measures, including proper lighting and secured entry points at homes and business premises to deter criminals.
