The national delegate representing Karamoja secondary schools at the Association of Physical Education Teachers Uganda (APETU), Bonny Otto, has expressed dismay over the low participation of Karamoja schools in the physical education festival.
This followed the poor turnout in the just-concluded regional physical education festival hosted by Moroto High School on Friday, 13th, 2025.
The festival attracted only two secondary schools from across the Karamoja sub-region.
Despite the poor turnout of schools, at least 35 students were selected to represent the Karamoja sub-region in the upcoming national physical education festival.
Speaking to Etoil A Karamoja in an interview, Otto underscored the need for head teachers to embrace and support physical education activities, noting that Physical Education is a deliberate effort to vocationalise education in Uganda.
According to him, physical education is compulsory for Senior One and Two students under the lower secondary school curriculum which was introduced in 2022.
He emphasized the utilization of the competence-based curriculum for lower secondary, which promotes practical skills acquisition.
Otto explained that physical activities among young people provide an opportunity to develop the values and skills for an active lifestyle and high self-esteem.
He highlighted that physical education serves as a holistic tool that not only contributes to personal growth but also plays a vital role in the industrialization of a nation.
This year’s national festival will be held in Hoima City from June 27 to 27.
The two-days event serves as a test of teachers’ competences and is aimed at promoting the subject across schools in Uganda.
Karamoja sub-region is the defending champion of the national physical education festival, having won last year’s edition.
