Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development and UNICEF have initiated child protection training for community members and religious leaders in Moroto District.

Lucy Otto, Assistant Commissioner for Family Affairs at the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, revealed the training’s goal is to build local capacity for child protection, especially since children are a primary labor source in Moroto.

Otto cited a 2019 UNICEF-supported study, indicating that 80 percent of violence against children occurs within homes, with parents often being the perpetrators.

She stressed that child protection is a shared responsibility, with parents at the forefront, and religious leaders playing a vital role in proper upbringing.

Mark Musooka AOL, Assistant Resident District Commissioner, stressed the crucial role of parents in safeguarding children from abuse.

He urged parents to raise their children in alignment with child protection laws, emphasizing that “children are the future of tomorrow” and the community’s responsibility lies in nurturing respectful, community-developing citizens.

Irene Ayot, UNICEF Child Protection Officer for Moroto, reiterated UNICEF’s commitment to working with the Ugandan government to protect children from all forms of exploitation, including child labor.
