Raymond Bernard Opolot, 53, head teacher of Toroma Secondary School in the Katakwi District, is seeking financial assistance worth Shs100 million to undergo brain surgery in India.

Medical professionals have indicated that he requires specialized surgery, which is available in India.

Opolot, who has dedicated many years to the education sector, described how his health issues began while he was at school.

The situation escalated dramatically when he collapsed unexpectedly during a trip from school to Soroti, while accompanied by his cousin.

Doctors have instructed Opolot to avoid excessive talking, loud environments, excitement, and anger to manage his condition.

Initially, he was taken to Joint Clinic and later admitted to Soroti Regional Referral Hospital, where he spent approximately a week.

Due to the severity of his condition, he was referred to Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala on November 22, 2025, for advanced care.

According to a referral letter from Dr. Charles Olaro, dated January 22, 2026, Opolot requires digital subtraction angiography and coiling for a left anterior communicating artery aneurysm in India.

This letter is addressed to Dr. Nikhil H. Rahul, a Consultant Interventional Radiologist at Yashoda Hospital in Hyderabad.

Opolot, who is stable on treatment for immune suppressive syndrome, has experienced an acute onset of a generalized headache lasting 10 days, alongside neck pain and reduced consciousness.

Investigations revealed a diagnosis of a left anterior communicating artery aneurysm.

Dr. Michael Edgar Muhumuza, a senior consultant neurosurgeon at Mulago Hospital, has referred Opolot to Yashoda Hospital due to insufficient capacity for the procedure within the country.

The family is expected to cover all costs related to travel, treatment, and accommodation in India for around 15 days.

According to Dr. Nikhil, a medical expert from India, Opolot requires a thorough evaluation that includes an MRI, a Complete Neuro Profile, a Surgical Profile, and Digital Subtraction Angiography, followed by an interventional procedure involving Coiling and possibly a stent.

If the aneurysm is wide-necked, a flow diverter may also be necessary.

The anticipated cost for the surgery alone exceeds Shs100 million, and this total does not account for travel, accommodation, welfare, or the expenses of accompanying caregivers.

Currently, Opolot is at home in Ogasia cell, Madera ward, Soroti City, working to gather funds for this vital surgery.

During a Catholic communion service and mini-fundraising event held at his home on Sunday, February 15th, 2026, a total of Shs1.2 million was raised in cash.

This amount is in addition to the Shs6.5 million contributed by head teachers during their meetings at his residence.

James Stephen Engole, the chairperson of the Katakwi head teachers association and head of resource mobilization, reported that they have raised only Shs40 million so far, but an additional Shs60 million is still needed to ensure the surgery takes place next week.

Meanwhile, Judith Aosan, Opolot’s wife, expressed her distress that her husband was supposed to be flown to India for brain surgery on December 2nd of last year, but they have yet to secure the necessary funds for the medical expenses.

She is appealing for additional financial support from the government and any Good Samaritans willing to help cover her husband’s medical bills in India.
