The recently concluded National Resistance Movement (NRM) primaries for LCV chairperson, mayoral and district councilors flag bearers have unleashed a blend of seasoned politicians and newcomers in Karamoja sub-region ahead of upcoming the 2026, general elections, slated for January.

Karamoja sub-region is subdivided into two, the Northern part comprising districts of Abim, Kotido, Kaabong, and Karenga while the South Karamoja covers the districts of Amudat, Napak, Nakapiripirit, Nabilatuk, and Moroto.

The incumbents who lost their bid to retain the NRM party flag for 2026 general elections, include; the LCV chairperson Nakapiripirit district, John Nangiro, and David Koryanga, the LCV chairperson of Moroto district.

John Nangiro, who got 3,328 votes lost to Simon Lokiru Lolim, who garnered 12,591 votes, defeating his closest Moses Sylvester Lokiru, who got 11,596, and Moses Akol Moru garnered 798 votes.

The Moroto district Anjello Pulkol, the LCV Councillor for Loputuk Sub-County, was declared the winner after gaining 14,044 votes, defeating the incumbent David Koryang, who got 3,852 votes and John Tunta Lokwang, 8,553 votes.

The incumbents who survived purge include; Kotido LCV chairman Paul Lote Komol, John Paul Kodet, the LCV chairman of Napak district, and the Abim LCV chairman, Johny Dewest Ariko.

Kodet, retained his position after scoring 33,104 votes against his opponent Mark Poi Ilukol, who got 10,508 votes.

In Kotido district, Komol was declared the winner of the two-horse race on Friday July 25, 2025, by John Paul Namuya, the Kotido NRM District Election Officer, with 28,754 votes representing 52.0 percent.

His only challenger, Simon Peter Lodia, garnered 26,962 votes representing 48.3 percent of the total 55,716 votes cast, in an election that saw early low voter turnout in several polling stations.

Ismail Muhammad, the incumbent mayor of Moroto municipality and mayor Kotido municipality Peter Abrahams Irar also retained the party flag after securing a commanding victory.

Irar retained the party flag after gaining 9,188 votes against his closest rival Alex Paulsen Locham, who got 4,775 votes

In Moroto municipality, Mohammed Ismail, secured the party flag with 1,357 votes, beating his rivals Mark Sire, who garnered 1,067 votes, Noah Ewaru got 314, and Emmanuel Risa Bole polled 83 votes. 

Amudat, Nabilatuk, and Kaabong district had new faces after the incumbents crossed over to contest for parliamentary positions.

Albert Loris Lotyang, was declared the winner for Kaabong district, William Bwantum won in Amudat district, Benedict Lokiru secured the flag to contest for the Nabilatuk district LCV chairperson, and Paul Lopeyok emerged victorious in Karenga district.
