Two people have died and three others are nursing injuries after the Lobutel Riverbank collapsed on them on Sunday.

The incident took place in Natopojo village, Rupa Sub-County, Moroto District, and has been linked to a desperate search for stones from a deep pit.

The deceased have been identified as 4-year-old Ilukol and 18-year-old Longok Albino.

The three survivors, Lodonga Gloria, Napeyok Mary, and Nakiru Angelina, were rushed to Moroto Regional Referral Hospital and are currently in critical condition. All victims are residents of Natopojo village, Nakadel parish.

Eyewitnesses reported that the four females, including the young child who perished, were inside a deep pit collecting stones when the collapse occurred.

Alice Teko, a resident of Natumkasiko, was among those who helped retrieve the two bodies from the riverbank.

She described the harrowing scene, noting a lack of immediate assistance.

Joseph Otita, the Rupa LC3 Chairman, attributed the fatalities to the high levels of poverty in the region.

He called on the government to provide assistance and emphasized the need for affirmative action in the Karamoja region.

Otita urged the government to heed the advice of local leaders to effectively aid the community.
