As Uganda prepares for upcoming elections, religious leaders are calling upon voters to exercise discernment and prioritize integrity and community service when choosing their representatives.

Fr. Daniel Nabuya, the Vicar General of Kotido Catholic Diocese, implored the electorate to select leaders they know well, especially individuals possessing genuine leadership skills and a proven commitment to community development.

Speaking during a homily commemorating Saint Matthias the Apostle, Fr. Nabuya emphasized the importance of choosing leaders who will “bear fruits” for their communities, rather than those who “vanish” after being elected, leaving their constituents disillusioned.

He further encouraged voters to seek divine guidance through prayer, drawing a parallel to the recent papal election.

Echoing Fr. Nabuya’s sentiments, Bishop Calist Rubaramira of Kabale Diocese issued a strong caution against vote-buying.

He warned that accepting money from candidates in exchange for votes undermines the principles of sound leadership and fosters corruption.

Both religious leaders stressed the importance of selecting leaders who are driven by a genuine desire to serve, rather than personal ambition.

They urged the electorate to prioritize candidates with a track record of community involvement, ethical conduct, and a clear vision for the future.
