President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has made a bold pledge to the Uganda Cranes, pledging a winning bonus of Shs1.2 billion per match.

The announcement was confirmed by FUFA via their social media platforms today, Monday, April 8, 2025.

“The President has announced a massive winning bonus of Shs1.2 billion per match for the team at CHAN 2024,” the statement partly read.

The pledge was announced to the players by FUFA President Moses Hassim Magogo at the national team camp located at FUFA Hotel.

Uganda will face Algeria today in a highly anticipated match that kicks off at 8:00 PM at Namboole Stadium.

The tournament opener featured Tanzania defeating Burkina Faso 2-0, while Kenya triumphed 1-0 over the Democratic Republic of Congo; Uganda will kick off its campaign against Algeria.

Uganda Cranes target a decent start to the TotalEnergies Africa Nations Championship 2024 in a tricky tie against Algeria at Namboole.

The highly anticipated Group C fixture will see a repeat of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier played earlier this year which the Algerians won 2-1 at the same venue.

With co-hosts Tanzania and Tanzania starting on a high with wins over Burkina Faso and DR Congo, respectively, Uganda needs to emulate the results.

Allan Okello, the team captain, is confident of victory, although he admits the quality of the Desert Foxes squad.

“We have had very good preparations and we are ready,” he told the press. “The team we face has a lot of quality but if we want to go far in the tournament, we must get a good result against them,” he added.

Okello, who played in Algeria with AC Paradou, knows a thing or two about the opponents but says limiting mistakes will be key.

“When we played them in the World Cup qualifiers, we made silly mistakes in the second half despite having a very good performance in the first half.

“I know we shall make mistakes again, but not ones that will cost us the game.”

Led by Morley Byekwaso, who serves alongside Fred Muhumuza, Stephen Billy Kiggundu (goalkeeping coach) and a couple of other staff, the team has been in intense preparations for the past couple of weeks.

Byekwaso has hinted about the team’s readiness, the support from the other technical team members, including the head coach of the senior team, Paul Put, the players’ commitment and desire to play before the home fans.

The former U-20 national team head coach who led the Hippos to silver at the 2023 All-African Games has hailed the impact of Paul Put on the team.

Byekwaso insists that the prime objective is to qualify out of the group phase for the first time ever in the history of the CHAN competition.
