In a significant breakthrough, police in the East Kyoga region have arrested a fifth suspect and recovered a weapon believed to be used in the killing of Soroti City mobile money operator Patricia Kokunda.
On April 3, 2026, Kokunda, a 32-year-old mobile money operator and businesswoman, was pulled out of a taxi by armed assailants who robbed over Shs30 million and shot her on the legs near Teso Coach Bus Park.
The police swiftly responded leading to the arrest of four suspects identified as Alex Okello and Felix Onego on the fateful day.
Simon Epeu, also known as Iboda, was netted in Anyara Sub County in Kalaki District and Alfred Elacu, was arrested in Orungo sub county, Amuria District two days after the incident, following leads from their accomplices.
On Saturday, April 11, 2026, ACP Ibrahim Saiga, the East Kyoga Regional Police Commander, confirmed the arrest of a prime suspect, identified as David Emenyu, also known as Lipongo.
According to him, Emenyu was arrested in Abim District where he went into hiding after committing the heinous crime.
Saiga reported that Emenyu led the police detectives to Akaikai village, Soroti District where the firearm used in the murder, a motorcycle, cash worth Shs3.5 million and clothing worn by the attackers during the incident were recovered.
He observed that, preliminary police investigations reveal that the firearm was sourced from South Sudan, and the suspects had been tracking Kokunda since January 2026, with the intention of robbing her.
