The Kotido District Woman Member of Parliament-elect, Nuria Hasfa Teko, has vowed to defend her victory in court.
This statement follows a petition filed at Moroto High Court by the outgoing Woman Member of Parliament, Margaret Aleper Achilla, and the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party flag bearer in the January 2026 general elections.
Aleper Achilla is challenging Nuria Teko’s victory, citing electoral irregularities.
Nuria Hasfa Teko, who contested as an independent after losing the NRM primaries on July 14, 2025, to Aleper Achilla, is jointly challenged along with the Electoral Commission, the second respondent in the petition.
According to the results declared by the Kotido District Returning Officer, Julius Ogwang Ongom, Nuria Teko polled 28,820 votes, while Aleper Achilla garnered 25,962 votes of the total votes cast.
However, in a 96-page petition dated March 6, 2026, filed through her lawyer at Sali Advocates, Aleper Achilla claims that the declaration of results was illegitimate.
She further alleges discrepancies between the results for the Woman MP and those of the directly elected Member of Parliament, arguing that this substantiates the Electoral Commission’s failure to conduct a free and fair election.
When contacted, Nuria Hasfa Teko, the Woman MP-elect and first respondent in the petition, acknowledged receipt of the petition.
She stated that she and her legal team are reviewing the petition and will file a defense within the stipulated timeframe.
