The Moroto Resident District Commissioner, Benon Kwikiriza, has assured the public of a safe Christmas season, warning that those intending to engage in criminal activities, which will jeopardise peace, will be dealt with accordingly. 

Kwikiriza, who doubles as the chairperson of the district security committee said all security arrangements have been put in place to protect people and enforce laws and order during the Christmas and New Year celebrations, which coincide with the run-up to the 2026 general elections.

According to him, the police and sister security agencies will conduct foot and motorized patrols within the Municipality and the district to ensure that people celebrate the birth of Jesus peacefully.

He acknowledged that security organs are facing some challenges that limit their ability to deliver services fully in line with public expectations.

Despite the challenges, stressed that ensuring the safety of people and their property throughout festive season remains a top priority.

“I want to assure the public that the festive season, which is coming will be highly protected. We have put in place security coverage for the festive season and new year. please don’t worry, you will be protected, enjoy Kwikirisa said.

He also cautioned the public against advertising their travel and merry making plans on social Media, saying criminals often monitor digital platforms to identify unattended homes.

“Nowadays people are found of sharing their travel plans and photos online on social media. However, this not advisable as these same platforms can also be accessed by criminals”, warned Kwikirisa.

He urged those travelling to inform trusted neighbours or relatives of their movements and called for strengthening neighbourhood watch, emphasizing the importance of maintaining direct contact with the nearest police station.

Kwikirisa describe neighbourhood watch as “a community-led program where residents work with police to prevent crime, reduce vandalism, and build stronger, safer communities by looking out for each other and reporting suspicious activities essentially creating a local, grassroots form of crime prevention and community watchfulness”.

“Under the neighbourhood watch, local communities organize patrols, share crime prevention information, and develop close ties with law enforcement to enhance home security and community well-being”, he added. 

Kwikirisa appealed to the public to report suspicious persons and movements, stating that timely Information enables intelligence-led operations that help prevent crime during the festive season.

The RDC further reminded organisers of music shows and social gatherings that securing a written clearance from the security is mandatory.
