Moroto Municipal Council has issued a two-week ultimatum to traders operating kiosks in unauthorized areas, including roads, walkways and other non gazetted areas to relocate to Moroto main market or face enforcement.

The directive announced in a public notice dated March 6, 2026, copied to the Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Municipality Mayor, Division LCIII Chairpersons and Division Assistant Town Clerks, aims to restore order, improve public safety, and promote clean, organised and livable Municipality.

Richard Eyaru, the Moroto Municipality Town Clerk said the forceful eviction of those who defy the directive will begin on Monday, March 23rd, 2026.

According to him, the traders operating kiosks in non gazetted areas should relocate to the multipurpose Moroto main market constructed by the government under the Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development (USMID) Project.

Eyaru observed that there are about 1000 vacant stalls at Moroto main market which can accommodate vendors operating in unauthorized areas.

Information obtained by our reporter indicates that this is not the first time Moroto Municipal Council is asking vendors operating kiosks in non gazetted areas to relocate to the modern main market.

In 2022, Moroto Municipal leaders directed vendors to relocate to the market but the vendors defied the directive and remained on the streets.
