Makeshift housing, poor hygiene and inadequate sanitation characterised the living conditions of thousands of artisanal miners living in Loyoro gold mine camp in Kaabong district.

This came to limelight during an inspection exercise conducted on April 17, 2026, by a team of district technocrats to document the challenges the artisanal miners are faced with.

Loyoro gold mining camp has over 5,000 artisanal miners hailing from different parts of the district.

The miners told the district officials that they are living in squalor, enduring poor housing, a lack of healthcare services, safe and clean water, and pit latrines among other challenges.
