Residents of West Division in Kotido Municipality are living in fear following a series of night robberies perpetrated by armed men suspected to be Karamojong cattle rustlers that have rocked the community.
On Sunday, November 2, 2025, unknown gunmen ambushed people near Kanawat Primary School, about two kilometers away from Kanawat Trading Centre, at 7:00 pm, and robbed them cash worth Shs500,000, mobile phones and other property.
In August and July of this year, unidentified groups of assailants carried out similar attacks targeting shops and business people, stealing similar items under the cover of darkness.
The community is now calling on the District Security Committee Chaired by the RDC Charles Ichogor, to establish a police station in the area to combat unprecedented levels of insecurity.
Peter Praese, a resident of Nawojakitoi Cell, RomRom Ward in West Division said that the criminals have taken the advantage of lack of a police station to unleash terror on the vulnerable locals.
David Namuya Apangorok, the Rom-Rom area Councilor to the Municipality believes that establishment of a police station in the area would improve the security situation.
When contacted, Kotido District Police Commander Jimmy Tumusime said that the concerns raised by the locals will be discussed in a high-level security meeting, however, he didn’t specify when.
Over the past few months, Kotido district has been sliding back into insecurity due to cattle raids and attacks blamed on armed warriors still in the wilderness.
The recent killings in the sub-counties of Nakapelimoru, Lokitelaebu and Rengen are some of the evident cases, which have caused fear among communities.
