Primary seven pupils in Karenga district have taken their climate change discussions beyond the classroom to advocate for climate change mitigation strategies for boosting agricultural production and eradicate hunger in their communities.
The participating schools are Kidepo, Loyoro, Napore, Kakore, Pire, Nawara, Sarachom, and Lobalangit primary schools- schools located in Kerenga and Lobalangit sub counties.
On Friday, the young debaters, acting as a “Children’s Parliament,” brought their impassioned pleas to the district headquarters.
Their goal was to urge stakeholders and decision-makers to prioritize concrete actions on climate change mitigation focusing on the topic, “Climate Change is the cause of Hunger and Malnutrition in Karamoja.”
The pupils articulated how local communities and governments urgently need to implement environmentally friendly policies and practices.
They emphasized that these measures should promote climate modification to create conditions favorable for agriculture and food production within Karenga.
Many pupils noted that these debates have become increasingly influential in their personal lives and academic journeys.
